Adele: Downsizing, but Still Entertaining

When I thought about where I wanted to live as I got older, I didn’t want to move far. I’ve lived here 35 years and have an incredible community. I have a great network of friends and I wanted to continue hosting parties – dinner, cocktail, wine, the whole works. I cook everything!

I decided to build an ADU in my yard and move into it, renting my main house. I used my son, a designer, to plan a small home that felt large inside. It has high ceilings, all windows, and a very large feel. I’ve had 15, 18 people here.

The rental income from the main house has helped me be more comfortable, but the relationship with the tenants is equally rewarding. They are a young couple in their early 30s. When they first saw it, they called it their dream home. I keep the rent reasonable. We have gotten to know each other. They pay the rent on time and are sweet. I’m lucky.

I open up the door and the porch becomes part of the house. I can still entertain the same number of people as before.
